Pete Rankin

Owner/Head Trainer

I grew up in Hong Kong before coming to the UK to further my education at boarding school and eventually University in Cardiff.

I always knew opening a gym was something that I wanted to do; I just didn’t know when it would happen. Certainly not this soon, however I am looking forward to the fun and challenging times ahead on this journey.

Upon completing my degree in Sports Management in 2009 I embarked on a Diploma in Personal Training which led me into setting up my own business of training regular people in a 1:1 environment.

After playing rugby for many years I moved into competing in Kettlebell Sport before my endeavour and love of CrossFit arrived. The balance of weightlifting, gymnastics and mono-structural movements really push the body and mind to greater levels of fitness. I am dedicated to helping the people I train in their pursuit of conquering physical challenges and the mental fortitude that comes from the ability to overcome them.

Rhys Griffiths

Trainer

My fitness journey started a little over 3 years ago when I found myself extremely out of shape. This was due to spending my 20′s wrapped up in work and a lot of socialising using all kinds of excuses not to attend the gym.
In my teens I was very active mainly with Boxing and Rugby and have always missed the camaraderie of Rugby the most……then I found The Boat Shed.
I began by attending once maybe twice a week then thought I would give this “CrossFit” a go as everyone was very helpful and friendly, the rest as they say is history.
I have taken to coaching as I want others to feel how I felt and I enjoy watching people get the same kick I still feel every day I work out.
CrossFit has helped me in a variety of ways from how I eat, think and live. The Boat Shed is a real family gym as my wife and daughter have recently joined and I have witnessed a huge improvement in them both.

Qualifications:

  • CrossFit Level 1
  • CrossFit Level 2
  • CrossFit Strongman
  • OPEX C5 foundations course
  • UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Weightlifting

Katie Leighton

Gym Manager

I was first introduced to CrossFit in 2011 by Pete and have been training this way ever since, I was hooked! Before then I didn’t really have any fitness background, I had dabbled in attending standard gyms and slogging away on a treadmill or attempting some circuit I had found in a fitness magazine, neither of which was very exciting. In the past few years I have competed in several CrossFit competitions with fellow members of the Boat Shed such as Last Box Standing, Divided We Fall and Dual to Duel, although I was absolutely petrified of competing because I am far from being top of the leader board, I thoroughly enjoyed them all and would recommend anyone who is tempted to compete to just have a go!

If you have any suggestions for improving things at the Boat Shed, anything from a new class you want on the timetable to a photo you have for the website, please just grab me for a chat!

Qualifications:

  • Level 2 Gym Instructor
  • OPEX C5 foundations course
  • UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Weightlifting

Alex Yagoub

Trainer

My journey started when I was 19, and I found myself physically exhausted just walking up a hill… I knew at this point something had to change.

I tried the typical body building and cardio programmes, with quite a lot of benefit! But after a while the Plato hit and I wasn’t getting any benefits!

A friend of mine suggested it may be nutrition related and posted a video on nutrition, from the CrossFit YouTube channel, and through that I found CrossFit.

My first workout was Fran, just thought I’d give it a go.. And after watching elites take 2 minutes, and realising it took me 12 minutes- I knew I had tapped into something epic that I could definitely get better in! My love with coaching came when I joined The Boat Shed in May 2013. I always saw the coaches there smiling, never failing to be communicative and always supportive, and I noticed one thing, that people took solace in the fact that The Boat Shed was their sanctuary, and when they learnt a new technique or skill, they gave out such positive energy! And I wanted to be a part of that. I started volunteering to help with the Intro courses and tried to shadow as many of the coaches as I could. In February 2014 I took my CrossFit Level One certification and my journey began!

Qualifications:

  • CrossFit Level 1
  • Optimal Life Fitness Olympic Weightlifting Level 1
  • UKCC Level 1 Award in Coaching Weightlifting
  • OPEX C5 foundations course

I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend who is a member of The Boat Shed and I decided to give it a go and that’s when I found out how unfit I was! I haven’t looked back since.

Once I competed my Intro course I had the buzz. I did as many classes as my body allowed, the enjoyable part wasn’t the demands of the class but the people. Socialising with the members and seeing people improve and push them selves always amazed me.

After training here for approximately a year I decided I wanted to make the next step into the world of coaching people. After speaking with Pete and shadowing classes with him for a period of time, with his support I completed a CrossFit Level 1.

Qualifications:

  • CrossFit Level 1
  • OPEX C5 foundations course
  • UKCC Level 1 Award in Coaching Weightlifting
